Rex’s shoulders felt heavy.
It wasn’t his sector of playing politics, even though he’s an Emperor in the Mortal Realm.
He grew up a soldier, not a politician.
Carefully threading the landscape of politics wasn’t really his forte, and it felt foreign to him.
He wasn’t Evelyn.
Had it been her instead of him, she would thrive in this kind of scenario.
I wish I could ask Evelyn for advice, but our connection is too light to use telepathy. I can’t.
Just then, a sliver of an idea crossed his mind.
Even though this situation isn’t really his expertise, he doesn’t need to fully commit to it; there should be another way for him to reach his goal of saving Devo. Initially, he had little to no resources since he came to this realm empty-handed.
But now, with him becoming a part of the House of Castillon, he has more options.
He now has more paths to reach his goal.
I wanted the Duke’s seal so that I could visit the Skillian City and search for Devo. But there’s quite a big chance he’s captured by someone from that city. Even if I go there, they might deny telling me anything, and that’ll make my effort a waste.
Rex understands it now.
Going there would mean nothing, even when he has his noble status.
People of the Skillian City are certainly arrogant, as they were the ones who managed the Black Rift.
I might be able to find where Devo was if I’m close enough, but I can’t brute force my way out.
I need to be smart. Ruthlessly smart.
A small smile tugged on Rex’s lips as he got an idea, one that would certainly be worth his time.
But first, he needed information.
Fortunately, he’s in a place that must have that resource, and he also knew the best person to gather intel.
Rex turned to Rosa as he walked through the corridor.
“Have you seen Amanir?”
“Yes. He’s on the right wing of the mansion, opposite of you.”
“Right wing? Then we’re going the wrong direction.”
Changing his plan, Rex and Rosa turned around and headed for the right wing.
Naturally, they needed to cross the breakfast room once again.
“Lord Rex…”
Before Rex and Rosa could go far from the breakfast room, a voice stopped them mid-track.
Rex glanced over his shoulder and saw Syla approaching.
He turned around and raised a brow.
“Is there something wrong, Syla?”
“Nothing, Lord Rex. I’m here to deliver a message from Princess Davina.”
“Again?”
Syla shifted uncomfortably, putting on an apologetic smile as she was only doing what she was ordered.
Seems like Princess Davina was going to use her as a messenger to talk.
“I think the princess is going to talk through me, so this is going to happen a lot. I hope you don’t mind.”
“Not at all. What message do you bring?”
“Princess Davina wanted to modestly thank you for refuting the Duke’s ultimatum earlier.”
Rex opened his mouth, about to answer, but Syla cut him.
“But, she also wanted to know whether you’re using this to your advantage. Suggesting a one-on-one mandatory meeting with her—it’s opportunistic. Princess Davina wanted to remind you that she’s not, in any way, interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with you.”
Hearing this, Rex was at a loss for words.
Even though he knew that Princess Davina’s ego was through the roof, worshipped by the entire empire as the most beautiful woman of the new generation, this crossed the line of his expectations. He would never guess that the cold and powerful princess was this self-centered.
Seeing him fight for her hand with his life might have shown that he liked her to death.
However, his reaction when Syla delivered the news earlier should be proof enough that he didn’t care.
As he was about to answer, he frowned, realizing something.
“Is it really Princess Davina saying this?” He raised a brow. “Or was it Princess Liliana?”
Syla remained silent.
Regardless of her attempt, the subtle shock leaked onto her face.
It was answer enough that this was Princess Liliana’s words, not Princess Davina’s.
“Just tell me the truth, you don’t have to lie.”
“The… The thank you was from Princess Davina, but the latter was not from her. She thought you were angry and used the Duke to force Princess Davina to be close to you through these meetings. She’s adamant that you’re hiding your heartbreak.”
“I see.”
“Were you?”
“What?”
“Heartbroken.”
Rex knew the answer instantly; it was a no.
However, being truthful like that might bring him unexpected variables.
Now that he knew what Princess Liliana was thinking, he should keep it that way.
At least this way, he knew exactly what was inside her mind.
In any case, Princess Liliana’s way of thinking wasn’t entirely false.
Rex did outright declare that he’s a man who will get what he wants, so naturally, she was worried.
All she wanted was probably to keep her sister safe, which was understandable.
“I am heartbroken, but I have no ulterior motives.” Rex turned away, intending to leave. “Even if the princess didn’t attend the meetings, I wouldn’t complain, and I won’t tell the Duke anything. Now—if you’ll excuse me.”
He nodded to Rosa, and both of them continued to walk ahead.
Syla watched his back as he walked away, mesmerized.
“Not only is he handsome, but he’s sharp too…” She uttered fanatically. “Is there anything he can’t do?’
Reaching the right wind, Rex found Amanir.
He was sitting beside a natural fountain, surrounded by female servants who were pinching him or even using him as a cushion. It was a bizzarre sight, one that made Rex’s eyes twitched, “Here I am working my way through obstacles, and this damn, fat, animal is lazying around?”
“He’s a Demon Spirit,” Rosa chuckled. “And you can’t deny, he’s really cute.”
“Cute my ass!”
Rex approached Amanir with wide strides.
Seeing him approaching, the female servants instantly jumped and smiled apologetically.
“Scram, all of you.”
“Yes, my Lord!”
Almost instantly, all of them scurried away, leaving behind the sleeping Amanir.
Rex looked at him and sighed.
Since both of them were connected, assimilated through the Awakened’s ways, Amanir did not need to train. His rank mimicked Rex’s. Even now, with Rex reaching the Master Immortal Spirit rank, he has also broken through into that rank.
Even so, seeing him lazing around rubbed Rex the wrong way.
Had it not been for him possessing useful skills, Rex would’ve thrown Amanir across the mansion.
But he was useful.
Amanir was the person who had the skills to gather good intel.
“Wake up.”
Bak!
A kick stabbed Amanir’s stomach, waking him up and flipping him over to his belly.
“Why the heck did you do that for?!”
“I have a task for you. Let’s go into your room to talk.”
Amanir grumbled as he flipped over, grunting in pain, “You can just tell that without kicking me.”
Inside the room, Rex looked around.
Other than being much smaller than his, the room was otherwise nearly identical in design.
Before talking, Rex summoned the golden halo, his Aegis of the Moon Sentinel Soul Artifact, and used its innate Minor Law of Misdirection. All that training in the Forsaken Tower increased his mastery over all his Soul Artifacts, including this one.
Placing his hand on the wall, he closed his eyes as his life energy turned into a golden hue.
Rosa could see the power of law intertwining beautifully—with his life energy, and within moments, a golden hue spread across the walls, enveloping the entire room like a cocoon. Once whatever Rex was doing was complete, he withdrew his hand and settled into the sofa.
“What’s that?”
“Just in case someone tried to eavesdrop on us.”
“Is that your law power?”
“Minor Law of Misdirection, one of my law powers.”
Hearing this, Rosa shook her head.
One is already impressive enough, but three? That’s ridiculous.
She began to feel pity for the Mortal Realm, which was forced to go against a monster like him.
It was no wonder he became an Emperor.
Amanir stared at Rex, his expression turned serious now, as the task must be very important.
“What do you want me to do?”
“You’re a thief, correct? I want you to go around the place and find out if there’s any information about Skillian City. Anything at all.”
“Still, what are you hoping to find?”
Finding anything is too abstract, Amanir wouldn’t be able to search the place well—without something explicit in mind. Like wandering a vast desert with only the vague hope of water, not even knowing if it existed.
“Names, any names, it doesn’t need to be a person high up the ladder,” Rex answered. “And a map, if there was even one. Oh, also, if there’s any information regarding their operation, that’ll be extremely great.”
Amanir nodded, branding those things in mind.
He didn’t know what Rex was planning, but he was sure that it’s going to work.
Above all, Rex showed everyone that he could be trusted.
“The Sky City only retains contact with very high-ranking individuals. In this empire, only the Emperor and the Duke were qualified. I’m sure there’s good intel here,” Rosa leaned forward. “But I hope you’re not planning on messing with the sky people. Some of them are as strong as the Spirit Emperor.”
“Are you afraid?” Rex raised a brow, smirking.
Hearing this, Rosa leaned back with her mouth agape.
She was at a loss for words.
“You… You’re planning on messing with them?! Let’s just see how it’d go with Duke Lorcan first.”
“I’m in a rush, Great Elder. I have to take risks.”
“You don’t know who the sky people are, Lord Rex. I assure you—the risk outweighs the reward.”
“Don’t worry, I promise the House of Aurelius will not be implicated.”
“That’s not what I’m saying…”
Rosa leaned back and sighed, massaging her throbbing forehead, as this was crazy in her view.
Only a madman would mess with the sky people.
But then again, Rex wouldn’t reach this level of strength without having a few loose screws in his head.
“Also, get Viora here—as soon as possible,” Rex asked demandingly, his tone was sharp, a lot sharper than the one he usually used when he talked with her. “Tell her that she’s not free from me. If she dared to refuse, I’d come pick her up myself, and it won’t be pretty.”
“You’re really something, Lord Rex…” Rosa shook her head in disbelief.
…
Later that night.
As scheduled, Rex was now standing in the garden.
It was the start of the mandatory meeting between him and Princess Davina.
Duke Lorcan didn’t waste a single moment and held it on the exact same day.
Looking skyward, Rex closed his eyes.
His torso was completely exposed, allowing the moonlight to embrace him directly.
Despite being able to go on about his day, he was still in excruciating pain, which was still happening.
<Adaptation Progress: 11,12%…>
<11,31%>
Several notifications appeared as his body adapted to the pain with the help of the moonlight, and the progress was pleasant instead of painful. He could feel his internal organs becoming more immune to this pain, before permeating to his external layer.
As this process continued, Rex’s mind wandered elsewhere.
Once I recover, I can begin amassing blood and corpse again, but can I even go out? Should I purchase an item to make a clone to stay here while I go out? No, I’m not sure Duke Lorcan could easily be fooled. He would know.
Rex breathed calmly, thinking of his next moves.
There’s also the First Stage Kei Xun was talking about. How is it tied to the invincible Apparition? How do I reach the Fir-
Before he could finish, Rex’s senses were alerted.
Both of his eyes snapped open, instinctively whipping around—only to find a gleaming object mere inches from his face, poised to pierce his left eye. A jolt of panic shot through him. Damn it—is it that knife trick again?!
