For many, attacking on Big Mom Pirates’ home turf, on Cake Island, would require tremendous courage. But Ian was certainly not one of those people.
Even back when he wasn’t as powerful, Ian had the audacity to set fire to Mary Geoise, the seat of the World Government and the Celestial Dragons. Now, here on Cake Island, he felt no pressure at all.
This was the growing mindset of a strong individual. Without boldness, how could one become a Yonko?
Though Katakuri had saved the others from Ian’s attack, just as the flames dissipated, he didn’t even have time to check on everyone’s condition before hearing another deafening roar.
Boom! It was the sound of a sonic boom. After unleashing Iori’s ultimate, black wings of flame appeared behind Ian, and he accelerated in an instant, rushing towards Katakuri at supersonic speed.
At such a short distance, charging at supersonic speed meant Ian closed the gap almost instantly. As soon as Katakuri heard the sound of the sonic boom, a streak of black light was already slashing toward his face.
The blade of Senbonzakura, coated with Armament Haki, locked onto Katakuri as Ian swung it, leaving Katakuri with no option but to raise his arms in defense. Crossing them in front of his face, he used his own Armament Haki to block Ian’s powerful strike.
As Big Mom’s most powerful son, Katakuri’s Armament Haki was equally formidable. When Ian’s blade struck his arms, the sound was like metal clashing, sending sparks flying.
Both of their Armament Haki were at advanced levels, making it seem like neither could gain the upper hand for the moment.
With a loud cracking sound, Katakuri was pushed back by the overwhelming force of Ian’s slash. His feet dug into the ground, leaving two long grooves beneath his shoes as the force propelled him nearly a meter backward before he managed to counterbalance the attack.Ian withdrew his blade, intensifying his Nen Power and reinforcing the Armament Haki on his sword, then swung down at Katakuri again.
Not one to back down, Katakuri gritted his teeth and launched a counter-punch directly at Ian. His fist, coated in a dark, slick layer of Armament Haki, collided head-on with Ian’s blade.
Clang! A deafening sound rang out, sharp enough to pierce eardrums, as a shockwave of powerful energy exploded from the point of impact, making it almost impossible for those nearby to keep their eyes open due to the intense force.
“Isshin Itto-Ryu: Crescent Slash!”
Ian’s sword, originally slashing downward, switched to an upward arc, carving a sharp crescent-shaped gleam through the air. The black glow of the blade traced a dazzling crescent moon in midair, leaving a deep gash across Katakuri’s abdomen.
However, Katakuri wasn’t hurt. With his advanced Observation Haki, he had already foreseen Ian’s strike and instinctively altered the structure of his body, turning it into mochi and separating his abdomen in advance. As a result, Ian’s slash didn’t make contact with flesh at all.
Instead, Katakuri’s arm suddenly stretched out, curving around to swing at the back of Ian’s head.
But before his fist could land, Katakuri’s senses alerted him to danger. He quickly retracted his arm as Ian’s flaming wings flared up, expanding fiercely, blocking the very spot where Katakuri’s punch had been aimed.
Though Katakuri possessed Observation Haki, Ian wasn’t easy to catch off guard either, using his En to stay fully aware of Katakuri’s moves.
Black flames surged along the blade as Ian swung the Evil King Flame Slash, striking nine times in an instant at Katakuri!
This was a technique Ian had developed in the past called Seven Flash Sword, but with his increased speed, he was now able to deliver even more slashes in a single moment. He hadn’t used this move in a while since his swordsmanship had advanced to the point where he could usually defeat enemies with a single strike. There was no need for flashy techniques.
The nine consecutive strikes targeted the most vulnerable spots on Katakuri’s body. This time, Ian also infused the blade with intense flames, testing whether Katakuri could still dodge using his Observation Haki to predict the attacks.
The fiery edge of the Evil King Flame Slash wasn’t something easily gauged in terms of range.
As Ian launched the attack, Katakuri’s eyes narrowed. In the future vision his Observation Haki provided, he saw that he wouldn’t be able to completely dodge all nine slashes—he could avoid the strikes but would still be burned by the flames of the Flying Slashes.
However, Katakuri’s extensive combat experience kicked in. Realizing he couldn’t fully escape the flaming slashes, he quickly formed nine mochi masses in the path of Ian’s strikes, using them as shields to block the attacks.
The nine mochi bulges protruded from his body like large lumps. As soon as Ian’s Evil King Flame Slash cut through them, they instantly turned into charred black lumps. But Katakuri swiftly discarded the burnt mochi masses, cutting them away from his body before the flames could spread further.
His Mochi Mochi no Mi is a rather unique Paramecia-type Devil Fruit, possessing both the fluidity of Logia-type fruits and the manufacturing capabilities of Paramecia. The nine mochi clumps were not part of his body but something he created.
Seeing how Katakuri handled his attack, Ian was slightly taken aback. He hadn’t expected Katakuri to counter his strikes so effectively.
The power of fire inherently restrains many abilities. This fact is undeniable, as demonstrated by Ace’s Mera Mera no Mi. As long as Ace didn’t encounter fruits specifically designed to counter his powers, the Mera Mera no Mi granted overwhelming force.
If Ace’s flames had that kind of power, then Ian’s flames were even more formidable. Especially against the Big Mom Pirates, whose Devil Fruit powers were often related to food—Mochi Mochi no Mi, biscuit biscuit Fruit, Lick Lick Fruit, and others. Since fire is used to cook food, Ian’s flames had a natural advantage, providing a strong restraining effect on their abilities.
Katakuri seemed fully aware of this fact, as he had been very cautious throughout their battle, avoiding direct contact with Ian’s flames.
With a quick leap, Katakuri created some distance between them. Upon landing, he swiftly crouched down and placed his hands on the ground, activating his Awakening ability.
Suddenly, the entire ground softened and began to ripple like waves. Katakuri transformed the ground into mochi, causing Ian to lose his footing. Ian immediately took flight, but the mochi, controlled by Katakuri, followed, attempting to wrap around Ian’s legs.
In an instant, Ian’s legs were bound. A tremendous force began pulling him back down to the ground, but Ian’s feet ignited with black flames, reducing the mochi that coiled around his ankles to ash.
Even though the mochi was incinerated, it had no effect on Katakuri. As soon as the first mochi ropes were burned away, more shot up from the ground, this time aiming to wrap around Ian’s waist.
It felt like a relentless pursuit…
It seemed that Katakuri intended to use this method to restrict Ian’s movements, but in the next moment, he realized his mistake!
Ian’s fiery abilities suddenly transformed into the power of lightning. A massive surge of electricity exploded outward, traveling along the mochi ropes that had wrapped around Ian. The current shot down to the ground and surged toward Katakuri’s hands, which were still pressed against the mochi-covered ground.
It all happened in an instant. The speed of the electricity far exceeded that of sound, giving Katakuri no time to withdraw his hands. He was struck directly by the electric shock!
Bang! A loud crack echoed through the air as Katakuri’s entire body was flung back by the force of the electricity.
Some might wonder, “Can mochi even conduct electricity?”
Indeed, it can! Mochi contains moisture, which gives it its sticky and flexible properties, and as long as there’s moisture, it can conduct electricity!
After hitting the ground, Katakuri was unable to get back up. Although he had foreseen Ian switching to lightning, his body couldn’t react quickly enough. The speed of the electricity was simply too fast.
Katakuri’s high-level Kenbunshoku Haki allowed him to predict a brief glimpse of the future, a nearly broken ability. However, even with foresight, he couldn’t overcome the inherent limitation of Observation Haki: speed. Seeing an attack and being unable to react in time renders that vision useless.
The intense electric current surged through Katakuri’s body, causing a thermal effect. As a mochi-based *Paramecia* user, his body became even softer under the influence of the heat. The mochi, when exposed to heat, became more pliable.
This is entirely different from being scorched by flames, which would have turned the mochi into char. The electric heat, on the other hand, merely softened him…
Katakuri lay sprawled on the ground, his body spreading out like a puddle of mush. Though he wasn’t dead, he wouldn’t be able to recover unless he cooled down first.
In this weakened state, his control over his body had also greatly diminished. He tried to struggle to his feet, but his movements were shaky and feeble.
Nearby, Perospero and Cracker hadn’t even fully processed what had happened. The battle between Ian and Katakuri had lasted only a mere ten seconds. They never expected that two seemingly evenly matched fighters could experience such a sudden reversal after just one attack.
In mid-air, Ian had already broken free from the mochi ropes that had entangled him. The mantra bandage on his right arm had disappeared, revealing the black dragon tattoo. Still fully engaged in battle mode, Ian didn’t hesitate for a second before unleashing his Black Dragon Wave toward the fallen Katakuri!
Roar! The frenzied black dragon, freed from Ian’s arm, immediately charged at Katakuri, baring its teeth and claws. The air quickly filled with the scorching scent of burning heat.
“Ahhh!!! Brother Katakuri!!” The members of the Charlotte family screamed in terror at the sight.
Perospero, on the other hand, managed to react. He quickly used his ability to form a solid wall of candy in front of Katakuri. However, facing the intense heat of the Black Dragon Wave, even he wasn’t sure how much the candy shield could withstand.
Just when the Black Dragon Wave was about to crash into the candy wall, a sudden voice rang out.
“Elbaf Spear: Ikoku!!!”
Whoosh! A massive beam of sword energy shot forth, colliding head-on with Ian’s Black Dragon Wave!
The Black Dragon Wave was completely obliterated by the overwhelming power of the sword strike, and the enormous sword energy continued its charge toward Ian, still hovering in mid-air.
Big Mom had arrived…
