Chapter 1856: Zoren’s Beloved Wife.

One reason Penny hid from the public eye was not simply because she wanted to stay anonymous. It was because she didn’t like the spotlight. And by that, she meant she hated being surrounded by media people with their cameras pointed at her.

She didn’t have a good memory of such attention. The last time her face was broadcast for everyone to see was when she had to beg and cry for help.

Although over the years, she’d managed to handle some level of media attention and cameras on her, all those times had been under the condition of Penny being aware of it.

Deep lines appeared on Penny’s brows as she reached the main entrance of the building.

“What is going on…” As she approached the entrance, people from the media perked up.

Like zombies, they rushed toward the entrance, only to be stopped by the line of bodyguards outside the premises.

The moment Penny stepped outside, accompanied by her just-as-confused assistants, the commotion outside finally reached her ears.

“Miss Penelope, is it true that you and CEO Pierson are having an affair?”

“Aren’t you ashamed to be hooking up with a married man?!”

“Since when has this relationship been going on?!”

The reporters tried to push the bodyguards, their arms outstretched, mics thrusting toward Penny.

Penny paused for a second, scanning the crowd of reporters trying to get a word from her about the alleged affair with her husband. If not for the bodyguards set up outside, she would have easily been overwhelmed. But right now, all she could think about was how these reporters were getting out of hand.

Well, she didn’t know it yet, but now, everyone had proof.

Back then, it was simply speculation with “blurred” photos. But in reality, the photos taken were of low quality. Now, however, was a different story. The photo circulating on the internet was a clear shot of her and Zoren.

“Does your family know about this?”

“Have they spoken to you yet? What did Slater say about this behavior?”

“Miss Penny, aren’t you afraid this will affect your brother’s career?”

Penny pressed her lips into a thin line before hearing Mark’s voice beside her.

“Miss Penny, please go back inside,” Mark said, gently holding her arm. “We’ll deal with them at once.”

“That’s right, Miss Penny,” Hayley, seeing the growing crowd, felt her heart clench. “Let’s go inside.”

Teddy and Shawn nodded in agreement, about to assist Penny when she sighed.

“I suppose I should really clear this up once and for all,” she muttered, thinking they all had a point.

Even though Penny preferred a very private life—a life where it was just Zoren and her in their quiet little world—some people were affected by her decision. So, she thought a public statement would suffice.

Penny drew a deep breath and raised her hand, facing the reporters past the bodyguards.

“Please, no pushing,” she said. “The people you’re pressuring are just that—people, not barricades. I’ll talk, but please…”

The reporters paused and exchanged looks for half a breath. Just as she said, they took one step back, their arms still outstretched, mics and recorders in hand.

As everyone focused on Penny’s statement, a few cars pulled into the driveway. Those in the back turned their heads and quickly spotted the people walking out of the cars. Their eyes widened the moment they saw a man step out of the backseat of one of the vehicles.

“Hey, hey!” One cameraman slapped his colleague’s shoulder, who was busy setting up a device. “Hey!”

“What?!” The colleague glared at him angrily, only to see the latter staring at someone in horror. Curious, the colleague turned his head, and his mouth dropped open.

Meanwhile, Penny smacked her lips and faced the crowd.

’It’s a good thing I practiced speaking in front of a crowd,’ she sighed in relief. “One article came to my attention just this morning—”

FLASH!

Just as Penny began her impromptu public statement, a blinding flash from a camera beamed at her. The flash was so bright it momentarily blinded her.

Instead of squinting, Penny’s mind blanked as her eyes remained wide. All the years of practice, meant to help her stand in front of people, felt like they had gone down the drain with that one single blinding flash.

In that brief moment of light, everything from that bitter past replayed in her mind. The incessant questions that sounded more like accusations, the chorus of voices, and the pressure in the air from the crowd surrounding her.

And with all these people closing in, all she could expect was an egg being thrown at her.

Penny opened and closed her mouth, trying to get rid of the thoughts swirling in her mind while still momentarily blind from the flash. But then—

Just as she tried to regain her composure, a hand suddenly grabbed her and pulled her. The grip was strong enough to make her spin, but not enough to hurt her. Before she knew it, a familiar scent curled into her nostrils as a firm yet warm body pressed against hers.

His hand gently settled on the back of her head, stilling her from the people hounding her.

“Back then, I wondered… if I came to you that time,” he whispered. “Would things be different?”

Slowly, the colors in Penny’s wide eyes returned. She looked up, meeting those dark yet loving eyes. The moment their eyes met, her lips quivered, and the corners of her eyes reddened.

“Renren,” she whispered, her voice cracking.

Zoren smiled lovingly at her, keeping her safe in his arms in front of all these people harassing her for answers, as if she owed them her breath.

“Though I do not wish to go back,” he said quietly, feeling her body relax against his. “But I won’t let you go through that again.”

She had already gone through begging for love and justice. Zoren wouldn’t let that happen again—not under his watch.

Zoren turned his head, keeping his wife’s head protected from the prying eyes of the reporters. Unlike the tenderness in his gaze toward her, his eyes glinted malevolently as he glared at everyone.

Everyone gulped.

The reporters standing behind the bodyguards stared at him blankly. None of them spoke, as if an angel had just walked by, but everyone knew it wasn’t an angel. The reason for the abrupt silence wasn’t just Zoren hugging Penny in front of the crowd.

It was that glare!

But the ones most shocked weren’t just the reporters hoping for a scoop. The most shocked of all were Penny’s assistants, especially Hayley and Teddy. Patricia? She just scrunched up her nose in dismay.

“You want a statement?” Zoren remarked, his voice cold, harsh even. “Then write this. Anyone who harasses my wife again, it’s not just you I’m coming after. Even the company you work for will be dealt with. Consider yourselves warned.”

With that, Zoren gazed down at Penny and smiled subtly. “Let’s go. There’s no need to pay attention to them.” He reached out to take her hand, while Penny kept her gaze fixed on him.

All the noise, the accusations, the harsh words, and the harassment simply disappeared.

Hand in hand, she let him take her away from the situation and back into the building. Penny didn’t even bother looking back, knowing she didn’t need to make a statement if she didn’t want to. After all, she had a husband like Zoren.

“Gosh. I’m wearing lingerie later,” she giggled, her arms hooked around his as she leaned into his side.

Zoren chuckled in return.

Meanwhile, as the couple walked back into the building, everyone outside just stared at them.

“What?” Teddy blurted out, wide-eyed. He looked around at the familiar faces, but except for him and Hayley, Patricia, Shawn, and Mark didn’t look as surprised as he was.

“You guys…” Hayley trailed off. “…knew?”

“No, but I had a hunch,” Patricia shrugged, then turned to Shawn. “How did you know?”

Shawn laughed awkwardly, scratching the back of his head. He spied on Penny. That was how. “How about we go in first?”

Since Penny and Zoren had already walked in, Mark advised them to go back inside. And they did, leaving everyone to recover on their own.

“Wi—wife…?” Someone in the crowd fell on his bottom, his face pale. “So, it’s not an affair—”

“They’re married?!” another person blurted out in shock. “So the mysterious Mrs. Pierson is… Penelope Bennet?!”

“Hey! Write that down! Come on—quick!”

“Call the headquarters and tell them to release the article now!”

In the blink of an eye, the reporters snapped out of their shock and rushed to publish this news. They didn’t get a controversial statement from Penny, but this? This was even better.

The moment the news was released, [#MRS. PIERSON] instantly topped the trending charts. The internet went even wilder when clips of Zoren and Penny during the live broadcast outside Prime Group were also released.

Penny also topped the charts twice, but that time it wasn’t something positive. In this life, however, it was different. It was better.

She no longer carried the title of a [Neglected Heiress], but rather she now carried many titles. Her favorite?

Zoren Pierson’s Beloved Wife.
