Chapter 164: Found a Treasure

Qingming Festival, also known as the Tomb-Sweeping Festival, has always been an important holiday. Many scholars and poets have composed works about Qingming, such as “Passing Qingming Without Flowers or Wine” and “On Qingming, Blossoms of Peach and Plum Smile”.

It’s not only a day for paying respects to ancestors, remembering loved ones, and reflecting on the past but also for enjoying outings and rejuvenating oneself. In modern times, it’s even a public holiday.

On this day, however, Xu Qing neither went out for a stroll nor was trampled by Jiang He. Instead, he stood quietly behind her, watching her excitedly play a game.

“Hu Da Tongshu has entered the livestream.”

A random viewer joined the stream, making Jiang He momentarily thrilled. “Someone’s here to watch!”

“Hu Da Tongshu has left the livestream.”

“….”

Before she could even finish her sentence, the viewer had left. Jiang He deflated instantly.

“Hu Da Tongshu has entered the livestream.”

Moments later, another notification appeared. The same person jumped back into the stream. Jiang He no longer dared to get excited or talk to Xu Qing. Instead, she fixed her focus on the screen, concentrating on PvP.

If she spoke, the viewer might leave again.

Xu Qing stood still, quietly holding a stance, his mind wandering to the mysteries of the universe. A random viewer or two made no difference to him. He occasionally glanced at Jiang He’s calm, steady gameplay, where she defeated her opponent at a leisurely pace.

This was the first time he had maintained his stance for so long. Previously, he had only managed half an hour before growing used to it. Now, after forty minutes, he felt a bit tired but tried to persevere. Just as he prepared to wrap up, the viewer who had been in the stream for over ten minutes finally spoke.

“Hu Da Tongshu: What’s that thing behind you?”

Jiang He’s sharp eyes caught the comment. While launching a long-duration ultimate move in-game, she quickly turned to glance behind her.

“Oh, that’s Zhong Kui.”

???

On the other side of the screen, the young man watching almost choked. Who didn’t know that was Zhong Kui?! He was asking about the motionless thing behind her... Wait, it moved!

“All done for today,” Xu Qing said, finally ending his stance and calling out to Jiang He.

Just as Jiang He landed a KO on her opponent, she noticed the viewer hadn’t commented further. She swung her mouse to close the stream, then excitedly turned around. “Someone was watching!”

“I know. You even introduced Zhong Kui.”

“One person a day means 360 viewers in a year…” Jiang He started calculating on her fingers, instinctively thinking about how many jars of pickles she could sell to 360 people.

Oh… but she didn’t have a store yet.

“Don’t bother calculating. One or two viewers won’t make a difference. They might not even come back tomorrow. And as your rank increases, you won’t always win. If you start losing a lot, fewer people will watch.”

Xu Qing offered a dose of reality, trying to prepare her for what could happen.

“But maybe they’ll come back tomorrow?”

“Mm… sure. For now, you should go cook dinner.”

It was her first livestream. Starting at 4 PM, she had streamed for an hour. The stream’s description had clearly stated the schedule as 7–8 PM, so this first day wasn’t a no-show. Tomorrow, they could continue.

Xu Qing stretched his legs and moved around. Standing still had made his body warm, so he decided to follow up with a quick set of punches. He was no longer the weakling who’d tremble after a few minutes of standing.

Some older Taiji practitioners also began their routines with ten minutes of standing meditation to get their blood flowing. Once their arms felt warm, they’d start their practice. Xu Qing’s high school physics teacher used to do this every morning on the school track.

“What do you want to eat?” Jiang He asked. In high spirits, she peeked into the fridge. Finding it nearly empty, she grabbed her keys to go shopping. She turned back to ask Xu Qing, who was practicing punches.

“Today is Qingming. Let’s have dumplings for the holiday.”

“Do people eat dumplings for Qingming?”

“I just feel like eating them—pork and scallion dumplings.”

Both of them loved dumplings. Holidays or not, they’d always find an excuse to indulge. Once, Jiang He had made dumplings to celebrate getting a rare in-game card worth tens of thousands of coins, even though its real-world value was barely a dollar.

The ground outside was still damp. Jiang He stepped out with her keys, nodding politely at Uncle Zhao near the main gate. She then spotted Cheng Yulan carrying her basket in the distance and hurried to catch up, intending to follow her to buy groceries.

Though they were eating dumplings tonight, they still needed food for tomorrow. Neither Jiang He nor Xu Qing liked shopping daily. The invention of the fridge was a blessing, sparing them frequent trips to the market, which often reeked—especially near the fish stalls.

“Grocery shopping again?”

“Mm, we’re out of vegetables.”

“Xu Qing is lucky to have you,” Cheng Yulan said with a sigh.

She remembered how it used to be delivery drivers stopping by Xu Qing’s place. At some point, it had become Jiang He at the market instead.

“Where did you get your basket?” Jiang He finally asked, admiring Cheng Yulan’s basket for ages. It looked so handy.

“This? I wove it myself ages ago. They’re hard to find now.”

“Mm, I’ve seen plastic ones at the supermarket, but they’re flimsy. I want one like yours.”

The two chatted intermittently until Jiang He realized Cheng Yulan wasn’t heading to the market.

“Can I come back half an hour late?”

At home, Xu Qing received Jiang He’s WeChat message. He thought for a moment and replied, “What happened?”

“Aunt Cheng said they’re giving out eggs here,” Jiang He explained, attaching a photo of a health seminar for middle-aged and elderly people.

Xu Qing opened the image, hesitated for a moment, and asked, “Are you sure they’ll give eggs to someone like you?”

These events usually gave out cheap items like cups or eggs to draw in older attendees while promoting health supplements or massage devices. Jiang He, a young girl, might not be able to “reap the benefits.”

“Aunt Cheng said they always give them out. She’s gotten eggs and even a thermos here before.”

“Alright. Just be mindful of others. If they don’t give you anything, don’t make it awkward for them.”

Xu Qing wasn’t opposed to waiting an extra half hour for dinner. If Jiang He got tricked into buying supplements, it’d be a valuable lesson: nothing truly comes for free.

However, with Cheng Yulan around—a seasoned freebie collector who’d amassed thermoses, warmers, umbrellas, and countless eggs without buying a single thing—there was little chance of that happening.

When Jiang He returned, she carried not just groceries but a small plastic box with two eggs.

“They actually gave out eggs. People are so nice,” she said while organizing the fridge.

“Did they try to sell you anything?” Xu Qing asked, ready to deliver a life lesson.

“They wanted me to buy some electromagnetic pillow for elderly family members, but my family’s all in the Kaiyuan era,” Jiang He said, a bit regretfully.

If there were a time machine, she might have bought one for the accountant, who often complained of neck pain.

As for the Second Boss and others, they were still young and healthy, their martial arts training keeping them in good shape.
