Book 16: Chapter 7

“Well, what other bright ideas do you have?”

“Uh… Pinch the invitations sent out? You know how people in the martial world are awfully prideful. They probably wouldn’t be shameless enough to rock up without an invitation.”

“Tell me you’re stupid without telling me you’re stupid.” Shen Yiren grinned. “If you ask Matriarch Zi to call it off, I’ll bet anything every soul in her sect will chase you down until you’re dead. If you ask your shifu to call it off, without even mentioning it was your idea, I guarantee your shiniangs will beat your socks off. What if the two of them meet up, though? Considering their relationship, don’t you think all hard feelings will be swept under the rug when they’re reunited?”

Ming Feizhen gradually developed a smile that grew larger and larger. The idea did occur to him before. Unfortunately, due to how busy he had been, Yu Feiyuan’s sudden appearance and the constant meetings, he did not think as far as Shen Yiren.

Ming Huayu and Zi Wutong were deeply in love when they were together. Had it not been for his philandering ways and him doting on his wives, he would not have let them stop him from marrying her, too. It was said that Matriarch Zi once gasped blood and suffered a serious injury when she was distracted and thought of him after their breakup. Therefore, Shen Yiren’s suggestion sounded as though it had some real merit.

“Boss, you’re a genius! You should’ve shared the idea sooner if you thought of it already. I thought my heart was going to explode.”

“Nowhere as genius as you. I don’t know how someone can eat several hundred thousand taels of food. If you don’t control your spending habits, you’re going to eat yourself into poverty.”

If Boss finds out I have a huge stash and yet haven’t offered to invest it into Liu Shan Men, will Boss be on my case?

“Ahaha, I’m broke to begin with.”

“Oh?” Shen Yiren set her brush down and looked at the man staring at the roof. Noticing the silver pearls on his forehead, she giggled. “I was just scaring you. Any money you make outside of your salary is your own income, not Liu Shan Men’s. Besides, if you use money you obtained through questionable means to finance Liu Shan Men, how do we explain it?”

“Boss, your Precision Scout is basically magic. Rest assured. Any money I invest into Liu Shan Men is money earned through perfectly legitimate means. I spend everything that was obtained through questionable means.” Realising he had a slip of the tongue after the fact, Ming Feizhen added, “I meant that I had someone spend it, and it was all spent on building up Liu Shan Men.”

Shen Yiren got off Ming Feizhen’s thigh and went to sit at her desk. Ming Feizhen went to fetch her chair right away. He slid her chair under her for her in a timely manner, while she sat down without any doubt that her chair would be there.

“Just stay out of trouble. The 1500 Nanjiang youths we stationed outside of the city have been progressing well in their training. I intend to station them in Luoyang later on so that they can see what’s demanded of military forces in the Central Plain, and it’s time they start contributing.”

Despite the large number of them, the clashing personalities and language differences, there was one advantage that no other force could have had. They truly looked up to Ming Feizhen, so they were able to bear all hardships pitched at them, and they did not ask for a salary, being satisfied just as long as they were fed and offered a roof over their heads. If Ming Feizhen was their King, then they already saw Shen Yiren as their Queen, so they observed her every command. In order for them to continue developing, though, they had to expose themselves to a different environment. Safety regulations around the capital were extremely strict; stationing 1500 soldiers in its vicinity would undoubtedly arouse scandals. In contrast, there was no such concern at Luoyang. Plus, the fortified city was one had to pass by to gain experience.

Looking at Ming Feizhen out of her peripherals, Shen Yiren added, “You better train your subordinates well. Wawa is one of us now. It’s not an issue if she throws a tantrum, but that’s not the case with the others. How can you rely on them if there’s no discipline?”

Ming Feizhen ground out ink as Shen Yiren wrote. He passed over ink as she switched sheets of paper. It appeared to be a most natural scene, but it was far from natural to the onlookers.

“Do they think we’re thin air?”

“They probably think we already left since we haven’t spoken in a while.”

Overhearing Tang Ni and Li Zizi whisper, Shen Yiren cleared her throat and said, “If you don’t have business, get out. Don’t stay here and get in the way.”

“Yes, Ma’am.” Ming Feizhen told the others to follow him out and dragged Li Chengzhi along.

Bai Lian asked Tang Ni to stay and took good care of the latter seeing as she was Li Zizi’s friend. As for Li Chengzhi, he got thrown aside as if he was trash half way to their destination.

Following Ming Feizhen, Tang Ye asked in a low stifled voice, “Big Bro, are you really going to use Vice-captain’s plan?”

Ming Feizhen grabbed his chin. “It’s an idea, but it’s rather hard to pull off. Even if I could find him, there’s no guarantee he’ll listen to me and go find Matriarch Zi, and it’s even harder to guarantee that he won’t smash me first.”

Su Xiao smiled. “I knew it! Are we going to come up with an alternative plan, then?”

“Uh… Has my assignment letter arrived yet?”

“Right here.” Tang Ye took out a document from his shirt and passed it to Ming Feizhen.

Ming Feizhen, after skimming over said document, mumbled, “His Majesty has given me three months to take up my post in Luoyang.”

“That means there’s still time. Hangzhou isn’t far. There’ll still be ample time to settle this first.”

Ming Feizhen shook his head. “His Majesty assigned me to Luoyang, and he demoted Boss to Luoyang. That can only mean he wants Boss to crack a few big cases outside the capital. The more time she has to prepare, the better. This issue shouldn’t implicate Liu Shan Men.”

“What’s the plan, then?” questioned Su Xiao.

“There’s the three of us, isn’t there?” Ming Feizhen chuckled. “There are things we can’t do even if the three of us band together, but there’s nothing that the three of us can’t sabotage.”

Tang Ye and Su Xiao exchanged smiles.

“Leave it to us!”

Su Xiao thumped his chest with a bright smile. “I have a great idea!”
