I’m the Only One Who Can’t See Ghosts

Chapter 104:The Middle School of Storm (7)

The man disguised as a fire lizard—a figure some would call “Mister”—Park Il, the head of Ilwol-Oakmoon, gazed down the school hallway.

What he saw there was a spectacle so intense it even made him nervous: a vivid illusion that spoke of the endless carnage that earned Eternal One her title. It was a vision of the slaughter that defined her very existence.

Yet, the man he had acknowledged did not succumb to such illusions. The man he recognized as worthy simply walked to the end of the hallway and embraced the weeping girl.

Sodo trembled in fear.

Based on Eternal One’s memories, this situation was surely a move that would shatter Eternal One’s spirit. And yet, this single move was warming her heart instead.

‘I have failed. O master of Cheonji.’

Sodo offered its report.

In response, it felt the disappointment of the one who resonated with it. The being murmured that Eternal One had lost her opportunity for a great revelation. Following the will of the Cheonji’s priestess, Sodo swiftly withdrew the illusion.

Park Il watched the vanishing illusion in the hallway and chuckled.

“Even if Sodo claims to be an untouchable sanctuary, it is still part of the earth. That’s why it’s called a ‘region.’ Sodo must have acted according to the will of the priestess of Cheonji.”

In other words, Sodo was following the plans of the master of Cheonji. Yet, those grand plans had been overturned by the actions of a single man.

“Even Ghost King and the master of Ghost Kings were sealed and destroyed under her plan.”

And yet, a mere embrace had dismantled the master of Cheonji’s designs. Park Il, proud of his choice of successor, turned his gaze toward the end of the hallway.

At the end of the corridor, a girl was crying bitterly in a man’s arms. Whatever had upset her, she clung to him, unwilling to let go.

The man holding her, Yoo Hajin, thought to himself:

‘At least Sojin is unharmed. That’s a relief.’

For now, that was all that mattered.

There were countless problems to address, but one thing stood out:

‘Why would figures like Gamlo and Makju come here? It’s obviously because of me, right? There’s no one else but Jamsuni who lives with me that they’d target after going to such lengths to disguise themselves.’

Frankly, Yoo Hajin considered himself a significant player. Hadn’t he recently destroyed Nesone, which had been flourishing? Any faction capable of gathering intelligence would know enough about him to avoid directly targeting him—hence, targeting Jamsuni instead seemed like a logical conclusion.

‘To be precise, it’s probably this school they’re after.’

Yoo Hajin had no idea what Sodo was.

He didn’t even know this place was Sodo.

This led him to believe that Gamlo, disguised as a security guard, and Makju, posing as a scholar, were scheming to take control of the school.

While comforting the sniffling Jamsuni, Yoo Hajin thought:

‘Is there a way for me to take over this school? That seems like the best way to ensure Jamsuni’s safety.’

But Yoo Hajin’s bank account was utterly empty.

In other words, he had no money.

Still, there was one reliable system in this world: negotiation.

With Jamsuni still in his arms, Yoo Hajin headed to the first-year faculty office. Who was her homeroom teacher, and why had they ignored all his calls?

“There it is.”

Upon finding the sign for the first-year faculty office, Yoo Hajin opened the door without hesitation.

Inside, a group of teachers sat with tense expressions.

None of them had stepped out into the hallway.

The same was true for the students.

As a result, only a handful of people had witnessed Kim Sojin’s past.

In cases involving supernatural abilities, avoidance was the survival strategy for ordinary people.

Looking at the terrified teachers who had heard the screams from the hallway, Yoo Hajin sighed and spoke:

“Hello? I’m Sojin’s guardian.”

“So-Sojin? Kim Sojin?”

“Yes, I heard my kid caused some trouble. Got into a fight with another student?”

An older teacher muttered in response:

“I wouldn’t call it a fight. That child dared to challenge Lady Cheon Siyeon.”

“Lady Cheon Siyeon?”

When he asked again, the older teacher explained:

“Guardian, do you know what our school’s name is?”

“It’s Changseong Middle School, isn’t it?”

“Correct. Changseong Middle School, under the Changseong Foundation. And the Changseong Foundation belongs to the Changseong sect. You’ve heard of Changseong sect, haven’t you?”

‘What is the Changseong sect? Some kind of sect-like Qigong or Ilwol-Oakmoon?’

Although Yoo Hajin had no idea, he nodded. He couldn’t afford to look clueless.

“Lady Cheon Siyeon is the granddaughter of the Changseong sect’s elder. And your child just disrespected Lady Cheon Siyeon.”

Disrespected her? I gently stroked Jamsuni’s back.

Jamsuni shook her head in denial, and I believed her.

Whatever had happened, it seemed that this Cheon Siyeon was the one at fault.

“You should leave quickly.”

A female teacher’s trembling voice broke the silence.

Her voice was hoarse.

“Could you be Sojin’s homeroom teacher, who kept ignoring my calls?”

“I-I’m sorry. Yes, I’m Lee Hyeju. I’m so sorry I could only make that one call.”

She must have barely managed to make a single call while under the Changseong sect’s watch. Instead of being angry, I felt grateful she’d even managed that.

“The master of the Changseong sect is an expert skilled in Sun Technique. the Changseong sect is stronger than most local sects. Guardian, you should—”

“Hyeju, stop talking. It’ll look like rebellion against the sect.”

“I-I’m sorry.”

Jamsuni’s homeroom teacher mumbled while turning her head:

“I’m sorry for being such a pathetic teacher.”

Yoo Hajin chuckled as he looked around the now-silent faculty office.

What an absurd world.

A world ruled by absurd entities like ghosts couldn’t be helped. In that case, he would have to act absurdly as well.

“So, where is this Cheon Siyeon kid? Leaving my child crying like this—where is she?”

The teachers in the office stared at me in shock, but my words didn’t stop.

“Call Cheon Siyeon and her guardian here.”

****

“What did he just say?”

Cheon Jicheol, an elder of the Changseong sect, muttered under his breath. He had received word that something had happened at Changseong Middle School, the school his granddaughter attended. And it involved her.

“A classmate dared to lay a hand on my granddaughter?”

And so, Elder Cheon Jicheol, along with disciples of the Changseong sect, made their way to the school. Who would dare bare their teeth at his granddaughter in Changseong Middle School, a place that was essentially the Changseong sect’s territory?

“The Changseong sect’s reputation is in shambles.”

Such insolent vermin needed to be thoroughly crushed.

To think someone would dare touch his granddaughter.

With that thought, the elder stormed into Changseong Middle School. His destination: the first-year faculty office. And what he saw there…

His granddaughter, Cheon Siyeon, stood with her face bruised, her hands raised in surrender.

“Who dared do this!!!”

“G-Grandfather!”

“Who dared to punish my granddaughter like this?!”

The enraged elder burst into the faculty office. But what greeted him was the sight of an unfamiliar man casually munching on the snacks laid out in the office.

The stranger spoke.

“I did it. Are you Cheon Siyeon’s guardian?”

“Who are you? How dare you do this to my granddaughter?! The crime of bruising her face must be repaid—with your life!”

Cheon Jicheol, seething with anger, immediately began forming a hand seal. But he couldn’t complete it. His hand had been broken.

“How dare you harm the dignity of Qigong Sect?”

“Qi-Qigong?”

Even with his hand broken, the elder didn’t dare show any pain. There were several suspiciously skilled individuals standing behind the faculty office. When did they arrive? Or had they been here all along?

If so, just how skilled were they to remain undetected?

And the Qigong sect? Wasn’t it one of the great sects rivaling Ilwol-Oakmoon during Kirieon’s time? Why were such masters here?

The man, referred to as the “Dignity of Qigong,” spoke.

“I’m sorry about your student’s injuries. But from what I hear, your granddaughter was the one who started the trouble with my kid.”

Yoo Hajin, the early, early, early senior and “Dignity of Qigong,” said:

“I won’t ask for much as compensation. Let’s settle this cleanly by transferring the management rights of this school to Qigong sect.”

“W-What?”

Flustered, the elder pulled out his phone with his unbroken hand. He intended to call for reinforcements from the Changseong sect’s headquarters. But from the other end of the line, he heard:

“Run!!! To the corners!!! It’s Wall Shattering Primordial Blast!!!”

“What about the sect master?”

“He was subdued long ago! Damn it, those bastards really are Qigong sect masters!!! Just one of them is enough to destroy the Changseong sect, but there are more than ten! It’s over!!!”

The elder could hear the sounds of the Changseong sect, the sect he had dedicated his life to, crumbling. And with it, his own resolve shattered.

The elder fell to his knees.

“Why... Why is Qigong sect...?”

“That’s what happens when you fail to educate your granddaughter properly.”

And so, Yoo Hajin left the faculty office, still holding Jamsuni in his arms.

As they walked, Jamsuni mumbled.

“When did you get close to Qigong Sect?”

“Just... as I lived my life?”

“Kirieon is a dangerous woman, though.”

No one knew better than Yoo Hajin how dangerous Kirieon was. She was a human bulldozer who had once tried to commit mass slaughter without hesitation. For that reason, Yoo Hajin generally avoided borrowing the Qigong sect’s power.

But this time, he had no choice. This was about his younger sister, and some risks were simply unavoidable.

“For you, I can handle that level of danger.”

“W-What? Idiot.”

With that, Jamsuni snuggled deeper into Yoo Hajin’s arms.

****

And so, the storm passed.

Cheon Siyeon dropped out of school, and Changseong Middle School was renamed Kiri Middle Schoo. Meanwhile, Jamsuni still ate her meals alone.

No one dared approach her.

Except for one person.

Noticing someone drawing near, Jamsuni mumbled.

“Territory.”

“This isn’t a hunting ground, so what’s with the territory talk?”

Startled, Jamsuni looked up and saw a familiar girl.

“Na Jooyeon...?”

“Can I sit next to you?”

“S-Sure.”

And so, Na Jooyeon sat beside her. For a while, neither of the girls said a word. Then, as they ate their meals together, they began to talk about what had happened the day before.

“You... You’ve seen what I really am.”

“I did. But I’ve also seen a lot of moments where you struggled. Like when you talk awkwardly to other kids, when you pretend to enjoy spicy food even though you can’t handle it, or when you act like you’re fine being an outsider even though you secretly want to fit in.”

Overcoming the past through friendship—perhaps it was nothing short of a miracle.

“Th-That’s not true!”

“Yeah, sure it’s not.”

The girls laughed.
