“Brother Li, how can our wife do such a thing?” Chen Mi asked with a sobbing note in his voice. Shen Li looked at the crying mer beside him and felt really upset. Of course he was angry with Yu Dong as well but there was nothing he could do.
The woman was gone and no one knew where she went, so where would he go looking for her? And he was to leave the house; who would take care of Ye Liu and the rest?
Shen Li also wanted to cry but he knew that he had to hold himself together. His wife was not here, which meant that he was the one responsible for everything in the family now.
“Alright, collect yourself together,” said Shen Li with a fake calm voice. “How long are you going to cry? Even if Dong Dong is not here, it’s not like she is not going to return; you all need to stop crying in such an ugly manner.”
“Stop crying. Don’t you think it’s too unlucky?” He asked the rest of the mers, who pursed their lips but still silently sobbed.
They also knew that it was unlucky but their wife—she left them without saying goodbye. Even though they knew that she was leaving, they thought that she would change her mind but now that she was really gone, the mers felt as if their insides had been scooped out.
Their wife was the core of their family—how could they live without her!
“What’s up with those sullen faces?” Aunt Wang, who arrived at the Yu house with a giant piece of pork belly, looked at the mers who were sitting on the couch as if the world was about to end and smiled at them with a light hearted expression. “If Dong Dong knew that you all would cry like babies, I am sure she wouldn’t have left you all.”
“Aunt Wang, what are you doing here?” Shen Li wiped his tears and then looked up at Aunt Wang and Uncle Fu with a confused look on his face.
“We are here to stay the night with you,” Aunt Wang said kindly. “Dong Dong knew that you all would start missing her and wouldn’t eat, so she specially asked me and your uncle to come and cook something delicious for you all to eat.”
“Look, we brought candied apples from the mall for you and the kids. Come here and take a bite. The apples are really sweet; you will like it.”
Shen Li wanted to refuse but seeing that Aunt Wang and Uncle Fu were doing this for their family, he didn’t refuse and asked the children to take one candied apple while he took the rest and distributed them among the mers.
Though no one was in the mood to eat they took a bite for the sake of the efforts Aunt Wang and her husband had put into bringing these things for them.
When Uncle Fu saw that they were still looking depressed, he shook his head and said to the mer husbands, “Alright, stop sulking. I know that you are afraid about the safety of your wife but Dong Dong chose this path and she must have thought something before choosing it. Don’t question her too much and trust her a little.”
Uncle Fu was also worried but he knew that at that moment showing any signs of worry would only make these mers worry even more, so it was better to not say anything that would make them panic when they were already worried enough.
“It’s not that we don’t know that she will be fine, Uncle Fu,” Fang Chi wiped his tears with the back of his sleeves. “We know that she will try to return safe and sound but—the thing that we are worried about is that she is our wife and the mother of our children. As long as she is fighting on the battlefield, how can we be at ease?”
“Our hearts will fret every day unless we see her alright.”
Fang Chi had never seen war but he knew that it was not a good thing. When he was very young, there was a war going on in the southern land and many commoners were dragged to participate in it.
The number of people who died during that war was not low at all; in fact, it could be said that more than half of the village was almost wiped clean.
He still remembered the haunting cries of mers, children, and elders who lost their loved ones in war.
So how could he not worry? After seeing the ugliness of war, he wished he could drag his wife back to the house and lock her up.
Going to war was not a joke!
Though others didn’t say anything, they agreed with Fang Chi.
“I know,” Uncle Fu smiled softly as he rubbed Fang Chi’s head. “I know that saying these things is quite easy and it’s the one who is handling and facing this, who knows how painful it is? But I assure you that you are not alone; we will try to be with you at every step.”
“Anyway, you are not the only one who is saddened by this news,” remarked Aunt Wang.
“What do you mean by that, Aunt Wang?” Ye Liu asked as he looked up and questioned Aunt Wang, who was already thawing the pork belly that she had brought with her.
Aunt Wang smiled at Ye Liu and responded, “The entire village is missing Dong Dong; they seemed to have learnt the importance of her presence in the village. You have no idea; the entire village is praying for her safe return. I don’t think that girl will even receive a single scratch on her skin after so many people praying for her.”
She looked at the mer husbands of Yu Dong and stated in a soft voice, “Of course, this period of time will be really hard on you but it will pass as well.”
