GREED: ALL FOR WHAT?

Chapter 2239 - 2239: Principle of Gambling.

The head of the family didn’t like that he was interrupted, but he didn’t become angry. He just kept quiet and let her speak for as long as she wanted.

She began pacing about as she spoke. “It shouldn’t matter if they did it or not. What matters is that we asked them to do something important and they refused. What matters is that they disrespected out family.”

“They are just hired help, yet they think they can disobey us. The gall. How disrespectful. We have to take action against them to teach them a lesson and to punish them for their crime of killing our daughter.”

She spoke for a long time. After she was done speaking, he still didn’t speak.

He was as quiet as a mute. She saw this and realized that she had offended him, so she sat down on the chair in front of his desk reluctantly and waited for him.

According to experience, she knew that she could only wait. If she tries to force him, things will only get worse. So no matter how impatient she was, she could only wait.

The wait lasted for ten minutes. During that time, he continued his work as if she wasn’t in the room. He didn’t rush himself at all.

After seeing that she had calmed down and was unlikely to interrupt him again, he began talking.

“As I was saying, anything is possible. The Golden Hammer gang might be responsible for her death and they might know nothing about her death. But it is certain that the Golden Hammer gang is suspicious. However, that isn’t enough for me to force them to open their minds.”

“My first reason is that they are not slaves. They are hired help and have rights. What’s more, they are strong. They are strong individually and as a group. It is not wise to offend such a powerful group for something they may not have done.”

“My second reason for stopping the investigation is that the outcome, if successful, is unlikely to be worth it. The repercussions might even be negative for us.”

He said to her, “Before you disagree, let me ask you this. So what if we force them to open their minds, read their memories, and discover that they were responsible for her death? What next?”

She replied immediately, “We will kill them.”

He asked, “How many?”

She replied without wasting time, “All of them.”

He asked another question. “Do we kill all the members of the gang or just the gang leaders, or just the gang leaders responsible for her murder?”

This time she hesitated before she replied. “We will kill all of them if need be.”

He nodded. But that wasn’t the end to his questions. “What do we do about the telepath supporting them?”

This time her eyes blazed with anger as she replied. “We kill him or her if there is one telepath. If there is more, we kill all of them supporting the Golden Hammer gang.”

He sighed and then asked her, “How much do you think this will cost us?”

She realized that they had reached the critical point, so she thought about the question seriously before she answered.

She knows that he doesn’t like unnecessary expenses, and if he will do something, it must be efficient. So her reply must prove that doing everything she asked for will not be expensive.

So she said, “You’re the strongest in the family. If you take action, it shouldn’t take five minutes of your time to kill them.”

He chuckled at the reply and said, “So you would risk my life for a dead person.”

That statement took her aback. She hurriedly explained, “That’s not what I meant. There is no risk to you, so you will be fine.”

He shook his head in disappointment. Then he asked her, “Have you considered that all of this is a trick to lure me out?”

The question stunned her. She didn’t know what to say. But he had something more to say, so he continued speaking.

“No, you’ve not considered it. But I have considered it. I could be paranoid, but it is not as if such a thing hasn’t happened before.”

“If I go along with your plans to force them and die, what next? But if I don’t go to fight them and send weaker godclads to the Golden Hammer gang, how many godclads do we have to send, and how many of those godclads will die for Celine?”

She still couldn’t speak because she couldn’t believe that someone was actively targeting them. Her mood calmed down now that she began to consider that someone is actively coming after them and that the Golden Hammer gang might not be the weak party that she thought they were.

He was still going through the documents, but he could still speak with a tone of admonishment. “That’s the difference between me and you and mostly everyone. You never consider the possible cost of taking action.”

“You don’t know that fighting is gambling. Even if the chance of winning is high, nothing is certain and we can lose.”

“That’s why I always say that if you are not ready to die, don’t fight. I am not prepared to die, so I won’t risk my life in a fight.”

He sighed and said, “I could lose my life. But even if we only consider the apparent cost, not the possible cost of antagonizing the Golden Hammer gang, the cost of forcing them will be high because they have eight rank 4 godclads, some of whom can fight rank 5 godclads. And there is at least one telepath supporting them.”

He spoke as if he was speaking to an ignorant child, “They are a den of lions, but you want me to go there and force them. If they resist, I might die or be injured. If they don’t resist and they open their minds for me to examine, what if I discover that they are not responsible for her death at all and are innocent?”
