A battalion of giant, battle-ready aliens could scare anyone, but Monica paid it no heed. The Scalqa also moved aside at her passage, recognizing their leader's woman.
Khan had chosen to wait inside the ship since he sensed Monica's arrival. He leaned on the cargo area's wall with his arms crossed, and his glowing eyes followed his Fiancée as she slammed her hand on the menus to close the doors and establish some privacy.
In a different situation, Khan would make full use of that private moment, and his ecstatic mood almost gave birth to a smirk to tempt Monica. However, he held back due to her aura. Clearly, Monica didn't share his happiness.
"What have you done?!" Monica shouted, still incredulous about that development. "Do you have any idea what I had to go through these days?"
Khan's unavailability had moved the network's focus to the second-best target. Monica basically managed everything in Khan's absence and was the only one who could speak for him, so it stood to reason the last few days hadn't been easy for her.
"Why did you bother?" Khan asked, shrugging his shoulders. "Everyone knows you can't make those decisions for me. They only hoped to scare you before I came back."
"And for good reason!" Monica cried. "What did you think would have happened? And why didn't you call me at all?"
The political mess couldn't stir Khan's interest, but the last question did. Truthfully, he felt terrible about that lack of communication, but things were still strange between the two, and Khan had a lot of thinking to do during the trip.
"I'm sorry," Khan apologized. "I had to sort my head out."
"So?" Monica wondered. "Did you sort it out?""What exactly are you asking me here?" Khan questioned. "Yes, I was in no mood to talk with anyone. I wanted to understand where I stood before meeting you, and I did."
"That's not what I asked," Monica replied. "How could you decide to leave humankind like that without warning me? What was I supposed to tell to your people here?"
"Are you serious?" Khan asked, slightly angry. "I'm talking about our relationship, and all you can think about is humankind."
"It's humankind!" Monica exclaimed as if those words carried intrinsic meaning. "It's your species. It's our species. Most of Baoway is connected to the Global Army, but you don't seem to care."
"I don't care," Khan confirmed. "And why would I? I actually put off this decision for far too long."
"What are you even saying?" Monica asked. "George, Luke, the nobles, and even I belong to the Global Army. What do you think this decision will force them to do?"
"I thought you belonged to me," Khan pointed out.
"That's not what I'm talking about," Monica said, calming down. "Khan, my family is a mess. The others' families are even worse off, and I can't imagine the nobles. Everyone feels betrayed."
"Do you?" Khan asked. "Do you feel betrayed?"
"I-," Monica muttered before falling silent to choose her words carefully. "I know who you are, Khan, but I thought you decided to lead humankind, not leave it."
"It might still happen one day," Khan stated. "I'm just done smashing my head into a wall. Humankind doesn't want me. It never wanted me, and forcing its hand will only lead to more battles, so it's better to leave."
"Humans do want you," Monica argued.
"Do they?" Khan wondered. "I'd still be a random Captain if the Global Army had a say in the matter. As for my family, they would have happily left me to rot in Ylaco's Slums."
"But you changed their minds," Monica reminded. "You could have changed everyone's minds."
"I didn't," Khan refuted. "I just became impossible to oppose. They never accepted me. They were only scared of what I was able to do.
"Don't forget that it's the Thilku Empire keeping us safe here, not the Global Army. The Global Army is only forced to negotiate with us because of the Empire."
Monica couldn't deny Khan's statement but still struggled to accept the matter. Khan had it easy because he had always seen himself as an outsider, but Monica couldn't share that sentiment.
"Khan," Monica called pleadingly, placing a hand on his crossed arms. "This is a mistake, but you can still fix it. Brigadier General Meadrey pushed you over the edge. The Global Army will understand that."
"Fix it to do what?" Khan asked, properly angry now. "Let's say I change my mind. What do you think will happen? Wars. Wars will happen."
"You don't know that," Monica exclaimed. "Everyone has seen how strong you are. No one would try to fight you anymore."
"That's what I thought after getting rescued from Baoway," Khan said, "Or after becoming a Thilku Ambassador or when inviting multiple embassies here."
The couple fell silent, but Khan soon continued. "There is no end to conflicts with humankind. Maybe next time, it will be a secret ploy. Maybe a bunch of Generals will unite against me and lay siege to Baoway. Maybe they'll just bomb the planet from orbit. The only solution is leaving the Global Army."
"But-" Monica tried to speak, but Khan interrupted her.
"But what?" Khan asked. "Do you want me to keep fighting just to pretend we still belong to the Global Army? We don't!"
"I do!" Monica shouted. "I'm a human, Khan! How can you not understand this?"
"You never cared about your family," Khan pointed out.
"I don't," Monica declared, "But this is about the whole species. I can't just accept to leave it like this."
"If I stay," Khan announced, "I'll have to face more dangers. Didn't you hate seeing that?"
"You won't be forced to," Monica argued. "I told you this war was a trap, but you didn't listen. We could have solved the attack peacefully."
"And affect my leadership forever," Khan stated. "I can't not retaliate. That's how I kept us safe until now."
"What's the point of having me at your side if you don't listen to me?" Monica asked. "Did you even consider my words? Did you even think about me when you made that decision?"
"Are you joking?" Khan questioned, pushing the hand on him aside while pointing at the ship's doors, targeting the planet.
"All of this was for you," Khan declared. "Every single battle since the Harbor was to secure a place in the world for us."
Monica showed a pained expression. She knew Khan was speaking the truth, but things were more complicated than that. Khan's political situation was too intricate to accept that simple
thinking.
"Well, I did," Khan continued. "We have a planet, allies, and a home. Isn't this enough? Can I stop trying to convince people I don't need and who don't want me?"
Monica didn't know what to say. Khan had cleared his mind, but she didn't and needed time to find a proper answer. However, the world didn't give it to her.
"My Prince," A familiar voice resounded inside the ship. Prince Thomas was trying to contact Khan, and he didn't take that interruption too well.
"Not now!" Khan shouted, and the ship's artificial illumination flickered. Invisible energy also accompanied his words, frying the menus and denting the metal doors. Monica was shocked. She knew Khan had gotten stronger but had yet to become used to his new state. Also, that sudden violent reaction reminded her of the first time Khan had used the toxic pool. As much as she didn't want to, her body instinctively trembled in fear. Khan noticed that reaction and pointed his worried eyes at Monica, but the dent in the ship's doors had created a tiny opening, allowing the passage of words without requiring devices. "My Prince," Prince Thomas called again, revealing that he was standing outside the ship. "Lord Rsi is here and demands your presence. It seems the Empire is summoning you."
