Chaos Heir

Chapter 1346: Separation

Chapter 1346: Separation

“[Is the toe part another human thing],” Liiza sniffed, trying to lighten the mood. “[Is there an actual line]?”

Khan laughed but didn’t explain that human expression. He brought Liiza closer, hugging her while Yeza kept crying between them.

Liiza avoided shedding tears now and mustered her resolve, remaining in Khan’s embrace while reaching for Yeza. The baby truly didn’t want to hear reason at that time since her senses were too sharp for her own good when it came to her parents.

“[Let me feed her one last time],” Liiza requested, her voice still carrying traces of the previous sniff.

Khan released Liiza from the hug, only to wrap an arm around her back. Meanwhile, Liiza loosened her robe, exposing one of her breasts to attend to their daughter.

Yeza played hard to get, continuing to cry, but Liiza’s scent eventually captivated her, stirring her hunger and making her accept the gesture. She drank freely, unbothered by the two pairs of light shining on her.

Luckily, the feeding session made Yeza sleepy. By the time she released her mother, she had fallen sound asleep, forgetting everything about her previous fit.

“[She truly took her sleeping habits from her mother],” Khan commented, earning himself a cute chuckle from Liiza.

Usually, Liiza wouldn’t leave it at that, but the situation prevented her from engaging in her flirtatious banter with Khan.

Instead, Liiza crossed her legs, carefully placing Yeza between them. The baby was wearing makeshift, loose clothes made of rags, and Liiza swiftly removed some to expose her dark-blue belly.

Then, Liiza retracted a hand, pointing it at her still-exposed chest to stab it. Her fingers dug deep into her flesh to flush out a few drops of blood, which she quickly spilled on Yeza’s belly once she pulled back her arm.

That pale-red blood formed a tiny puddle over Yeza’s belly button, but Liiza didn’t do anything with it and only glanced at Khan.

Khan understood that silent order and stabbed a finger into his palm, squeezing his bleeding hand over the tiny puddle to mix drops of his far darker blood with Liiza’s.

Liiza’s glowing eyes followed every falling drop until she reached for the now-larger puddle, making Khan retract his hand. Mana flowed out of Liiza’s forefinger as she drew a simple symbol around Yeza’s belly button, using the mixed blood as paint.

When the symbol was complete, the blood instantly dried up, turning into a dark-red tattoo. Energy that shouldn’t belong to a newborn now hovered around Yeza, but its purpose remained unclear.

“[Will it protect her]?” Khan wondered.

“[Not really],” Liiza sighed, adjusting Yeza’s clothes to cover her belly and new tattoo. “[But it will make her feel our presence, so she won’t ever forget that her parents are out there, wanting nothing more than to go back to her].”

Liiza had to gulp loudly to suppress another emotional reaction. Then, she retrieved Yeza from her crossed legs, careful not to wake her up. Her white eyes shone on her, not wanting to stop looking at her, but they eventually rose to illuminate another face in a similar state.

“[Is it time]?” Liiza asked, tightening her embrace on Yeza.

Liiza’s tone attempted to break Khan’s heart, which was already on the verge of falling apart. However, he had to be strong for both of them there. Just like Khan had done in Nitis’ village, he had to make the decisions that the Niqols found too hard to bear.

“[It is],” Khan nodded, looking down at Yeza, leaning forward to leave a soft but long kiss on her small head.

Liiza cleared her throat at that point and stood up. Khan imitated her, and the two walked slowly toward the room’s exit.

Leaving the building revealed a barren environment. The outpost was to be abandoned that day, and the soldiers had long since emptied it of any valuable tool or supply. Everything was ready for that final departure. Khan, Liiza, and Yeza were the only missing pieces.

Liiza and Khan slowed down their pace as much as possible, but the outpost’s glass eventually appeared before them, opening to reveal the outside world.

The camp had suffered from a similar fate. The soldiers and Niqols had retrieved anything they could retrieve, only leaving behind what they didn’t need.

The place now only featured ships ready to set off and random tools or boxes. Still, the soldiers didn’t forget their manners or status, so Khan and Liiza saw many teams wearing military salutes stretching from their position.

Khan looked at each soldier in the welcoming party, his meaningful gaze reaffirming stern orders he had conveyed countless times in the past days.

Needless to say, the soldiers shook under that pressure but did their best to maintain firm military salutes. Luckily, the slow walk eventually brought the married couple to two figures standing directly in their way, which Khan and Liiza had to address.

“Do this for me,” Khan said, “And I’ll owe you for my entire life.”

“You can trust me, brother,” Wayne claimed, laughing.

“I’ll see this little one in Coravis,” Deni said, smiling at the sleeping baby in Liiza’s arms.

“Be sure to be with her all the time after you land,” Liiza requested, her voice carrying hints of threats.

“Wayne, you’ll be in charge of the human escort,” Khan reminded. “Don’t let anything and anyone get close to the Niqols, especially their main ship.”

“I’m in charge!” Wayne happily exclaimed, crossing his arms. “I’ve become a trusted leader so early after stepping into the light. My future will be glorious.”

“We’ll head for our ship now,” Deni chuckled. “Have a safe trip, and come back soon. I’m no worthy replacement for Yeza’s parents.”

Wayne seemed about to shout something stupid, but Deni placed a hand on his shoulder, distracting him and leading him toward a nearby ship.

That event prompted the teams of human soldiers to enter their respective ships, too, and the whooshing of engines began to fill the area. Yet, Khan and Liiza resumed walking since they had another stop to make.

Almost every Niqols ship was already in orbit, and only the gargantuan, spherical vessel had remained on the grey desert. Khan and Liiza headed straight for it, eventually entering the tunnel that led to the artificial cold environment.

A screech welcomed the married couple’s arrival in the snowy environment. Snow descended at full speed toward Khan and Liiza before performing one of the soft and gentle landings it did in her presence.

The Aduns also put itself on its best behavior, quietly and proudly following the couple as they approached the three figures before them. Savdat, Zalpa, and Doku were waiting for Khan and Liiza, and their serious expression showed their understanding of the difficulty of that imminent separation.

“[Doku],” Khan called.

“[We’ll deliver her safe and sound],” Doku promised. “[I swear it on my own children].”

“[Great-grandmother],” Liiza called as the couple stopped before the trio.

“[I’ll escort Niqols and humans to Coravis as insurance],” Savdat nodded. “[What I’ll do next will depend on the Elders].”

Khan and Liiza’s gazes fell on Zalpa at that point, but she spoke before they could say anything.

“[I’ll protect Yeza with my life],” Zalpa reassured, her voice sounding sweeter than usual. “[Just don’t do anything stupid like dying while you are away].”

“[Thank you, Zaza],” Liiza exclaimed.

“[Thank you],” Khan added, even if he and Liiza had yet to deliver their daughter.

The couple ended up leaning closer, giving one last, long look at Yeza. Liiza lulled her a bit while Khan placed his hand on her little body, seemingly attempting to burn her warmth into his memory.

Yet, that moment couldn’t last forever. Liiza eventually mustered her resolve and slowly stretched her arms, handing Yeza to Zalpa. Khan kept his hand on her as long as possible, but retracted it once Zalpa secured her.

Liiza couldn’t help but lean on Khan afterward, and he sealed his arm around her back, firmly holding her side to prevent any sudden action. Even Khan didn’t know what Liiza could do in that situation, and only Savdat would be able to react in time there.

“Snow,” Khan called, diving his free hand into the bed of white feathers on his left. “Coravis might be a bit too warm for you, but you should be able to breathe there. Watch over Yeza for us, okay?”

Liiza aside, Snow wouldn’t dare to engage in its playful mood when its mental connection with Khan shared such serious emotions.

On top of that, Liiza also lifted her gaze at Snow, pleading with her eyes. The Aduns couldn’t resist that attack from two fronts, so it dived its big head between the couple, rubbing its feathers on both Khan and Liiza before releasing a short screech.

Afterward, Snow left the couple to approach Zalpa’s back, laying its head on her to watch over the baby in her arms. Zalpa didn’t exactly like her predicament, but that wasn’t the time to convey her annoyance.

“[Have a safe travel],” Khan announced, following Liiza’s eyes, throwing one last look at Yeza before pulling his wife away, knowing he had to be the one to take care of that task.

Liiza didn’t exactly play along, but Khan used some of his real strength, eventually forcing her to turn. She hid her face in his neck while he led her outside, crossing the metal corridor as quickly as possible to exit the ship.

It didn’t take long before the couple stepped on the grey sand again. Except, louder whooshing noises followed now. Ships set off all around Khan and Liiza as soon as they returned outside, including the giant vessel behind them.

Liiza left Khan’s neck to inspect the vaguely spherical, huge ship rising through the sky, tears finally streaming down her face. She couldn’t bear the sight for too long and quickly hid her face on Khan again, sobbing loudly while he watched the vessel grow higher and higher.

Eventually, Khan became unable to see or sense the vaguely spherical ship anymore. The vessel had escaped the planet’s atmosphere, carrying his daughter with it.

As for the dismantled camp, a ship still stood among it, awaiting Khan and Liiza for that fateful trip to the Nak’s home world.
