Chapter 1301: Complications
Deni was supportive to a fault and had the priceless skill to be able to deal with Wayne, so Khan could modify the journey’s arrangements without encountering any challenges.
After exhausting the talks and dealing with another general conversation, Khan sent Deni and Wayne back to the human ship, allowing them to continue following him.
That was merely due to a lack of space. Deni and Wayne were welcome additions to the crew, but Khan’s ship was too small for five people.
Moreover, Liiza’s meal demand increased by the day, forcing Khan to stock more and more supplies at each stop. The cargo area was often too cramped to be anywhere close to livable, and Zalpa didn’t do roommates, so splitting the crew between the two ships became necessary.
Of course, privacy was another factor that played a part in that decision. Liiza was barely holding on as she was, so adding her father’s constant presence to her surroundings could drive her crazy in no time.
Aside from those management issues, gaining that additional vehicle didn’t alter the voyage’s specifics. Khan still had to deal with the increasing number of Niqols teams that found him, but they were hardly a problem, especially since he had accounted for that delay in his schedule.
Nevertheless, one change did occur in that cozy, mostly peaceful routine, and its source had nothing to do with the human ship, additional crewmates, or checkpoints.
Despite being far away from the edges of the regulated universe, Khan’s ship had access to the network. Garret had made sure of that when building a path toward the Nak’s home world, and Liiza almost grew addicted to it.
“[Why are humans so concerned with this] dress code?” Liiza scoffed, holding Khan’s phone firmly in her hands.
“[I thought you were beautiful that day],” Khan commented, one arm wrapped around Liiza’s belly while the other was on the control desk. “[It’s a pity you tore that dress apart before we even reached our room].”
“[It was our wedding night],” Liiza pouted, “[And it was in the way].”
Khan chuckled, leaving a kiss on the cold head to his right while focusing on the holograms above the control desk. After six weeks of flight, the outpost appointed for Liiza’s labor was finally in sight. The ship was bound to reach it in a matter of minutes.
“[Another article came out],” Liiza gasped, straightening herself on Khan’s lap and clearing her throat. “How did the notoriously popular Prince Khan fall for his Niqols’ Wife? Here are five alien practices humans are still reticent about!”
The video about the marriage had gone public around five weeks ago, setting the network aflame. The recording even overshadowed the news about the Scarlet Eyes, and the gossip had yet to start quieting down.
Needless to say, most gossip took Liiza’s alien status into consideration. After all, Khan was quite the sought-after partner and the center of many romantic stories, so the general public wanted to find explanations that could justify how and why he had ultimately decided to settle in such disadvantageous conditions.
Liiza skimmed through the article, but its various bullet points put a frown on her face.
“[What]?” Khan asked, sensing the frown. “[Did they forget to suggest to make the potential partners climb mountains]?”
“Enthralling potions,” Liiza read. “Mating arts, bewitching spells. [Are they implying that I tricked you]?”
“[Oh, but you did trick me],” Khan commented. “[You tempted me throughout that whole flight on Zama. By the time you kissed me, I was already under your alien spell].”
“[Stupid],” Liiza laughed, putting down the phone, freeing one of her hands so that she could reach for the warm cheek above her. “[Why do humans have to make this so complicated]?”
Khan chuckled but didn’t reply, enjoying the cold sensation on his face while continuing to focus on the control desk.
Truth be told, that development had helped a great deal in distracting Liiza in those weeks, so Khan couldn’t complain, especially since he never failed to exploit specific articles about his popularity.
“[If we were on Nitis],” Liiza exclaimed, her hand rising higher until it clung to Khan’s neck, “[I’d only need to take you away in front of everyone. I can’t believe we got married before I could do that].”
Liiza didn’t want a reply since her pull grew stronger, lowering Khan’s head to her neck. He didn’t need anything else to know what to do, and a whispered moan escaped Liiza’s mouth when his warm lips landed on her cold skin.
“[Can you believe it]?” Liiza asked, her eyes closed as she enjoyed the kisses on her neck. “[Where we started … where we are now].”
“[Liiza],” Khan muttered, laying his head on Liiza’s shoulder. “[You know I can’t dream, but I felt inside one of the good ones everyone talks about since I first saw you].”
Liiza pulled Khan’s hair, scolding him for that dangerous honesty, and he didn’t hesitate to play into it.
“[That’s it]!” Khan gasped. “[All of this is a dream. I knew those legs of yours were too good to be real].”
“[I guess you won’t hold them anymore since they aren’t real],” Liiza commented, giggling when she sensed Khan’s body tensing up.
Liiza let go of Khan’s hair, half-turning on his lap to meet his gaze. She knew he was about to throw one of his cute remarks but interrupted it by leaning on his shoulder, looking down at the caresses she gave to her waist.
“[She is almost here],” Liiza whispered. “[I can feel it].”
Khan ignored the matter about the child’s gender and joined Liiza in the caresses. He could feel it, too. Their baby was almost ready to come out into the world. Mere weeks separated the married couple from that event.
“[Khan],” Liiza called, and her mana and the mental connection warned Khan about the more serious nature of the imminent conversation.
“[Thank you],” Liiza continued, her gaze still lowered. “[Thank you for all of this. You have made me so happy I struggle to contain it at times].”
Khan knew Liiza, and their minds were connected, so he sensed the reason behind those words.
“[I’ll burn the universe to the ground before I let something happen to you],” Khan declared, reaching for Liiza’s chin to lift her face toward him.
“[I’d do the same for you first],” Liiza smiled, still caressing her belly. “[But this is different. This isn’t something you can help with].”
Despite the constant check-ups and reassurances, the labor promised dangers. Khan and Liiza’s child never had a chance at being ordinary, and she would have to bear the full extent of giving birth to that peculiar entity on her own.
“[Don’t even thinking about it],” Khan warned. “[I can’t do this alone. This exists because I’m with you].”
“[I don’t plan on dying],” Liiza reassured. “[I want to see our daughter grow and teach her my species’ ways. I also can’t bear the thought of leaving you. I can already see you blaming yourself for everything again].”
“[My genes are the problem],” Khan pointed out.
“[And I made us drink potions to make this happen],” Liiza commented. “[I wouldn’t have done it if I thought I couldn’t take it. Just, I want you to know that you have already made me the happiest I can be].”
“[No, I didn’t],” Khan stated. “[Did you think I was done with you? You swore yourself to me for life, and I’ll probably have a pretty long one].”
“[If you don’t give me a reason to kill you first],” Liiza giggled, but her expression became serious again as both her hands went for Khan’s face. “[I swore to fix you, and I want to. Still, if something happens, you must keep getting better].”
Khan took Liiza’s hands, squeezing them while they rested on his face. He was about to refuse Liiza again, but she knew three magic words.
“[For our daughter],” Liiza added, and Khan became unable to reply. Her glowing, pleading gaze defeated him, making him drop his head down.
“[Son],” Khan corrected, sighing.
“[Everything will be fine],” Liiza reassured, diving under Khan’s face to make him look at her. “[But if complications happen, I know what I’ll choose].”
“[I know],” Khan sighed again. If the time really came when Liiza had to choose between her life and the child, she wouldn’t hesitate. Khan couldn’t even argue against her since he would do the same if he were in her shoes.
“[I warn you],” Khan said, lifting his head, “[If you pull any dirty trick, I’ll get the biggest harem this universe has ever seen and only put big-chested women in it].”
“[If I die],” Liiza responded, also straightening herself up, her knowing face unaffected by the threat, “[You’d never touch a woman again].”
Khan pretended to be annoyed, turning his head away while muttering a few words. “[That’s a possibility].”
Liiza tilted Khan’s head back to her, putting him before her serious expression. He sent a hand on her nape, and she bit her lower lip, ready to jump on him.
Nevertheless, something strange suddenly struck Khan’s perception, making him turn his head again and preventing the incoming kiss. A faint, vague, and muffled sense of uneasiness touched him, invading his body in ways the greatest poisons in the universe would fail to accomplish.
Liiza instantly understood the serious nature of the matter, and her face became cold as she focused on her senses and the mental connection. She searched for the reason behind that reaction, but her perception failed her.
Khan was in the same situation. He only knew that something was off but couldn’t explain why nor find its source. Still, a beeping noise resounded on the control desk, distracting the couple.
The holograms showed the increasingly closer outpost. The ship was almost upon that floating dome, but the beeping noise had nothing to do with it. The notification came from an incoming message, which Khan let through.
“Khan, I don’t know why,” Wayne’s voice resounded from the control desk, “But I feel as if things are about to go bad, really bad.”
